Playa del Carmen is warm and humid every month, so it never reaches ideal mild exploring weather, but January-April and November-December are good, drier options for walking around. The hot, increasingly humid, often afternoon-rain-soaked stretch from May through October, especially the June-September storm season, makes exploring outdoors uncomfortable.

The sea stays warm (27-30 C) and daytime highs never push past the ideal beach range all year, so this is a strong beach destination overall. December through May are the best months, with the least rain-interrupted days; June through November bring heavier, often afternoon-peaking rain plus, from June to September, extra heat beyond the ideal - enough to cost some beach time without ever washing the month out.
